PSNI 0 Ards 2

Second half strikes from Gerard McMullan and Ben Arthurs gave us a win over PSNI at Newforge.

On a fine day at the Country Club, Ards were comfortable throughout but in a first half that really failed to spark, there were few clear cut chances.

On 20 minutes PSNI would be presented with a great chance to opening the scoring when a stray kick out from Aaron Hogg found James Wright. His pass picked out another former Ards played Paul McDowell, whose initial shot was well saved from Hogg. McDowell then missed an empty goal with his follow  up.

A minute later and a good move involving Jamie Rea and Gerard McMullan saw the ball to trialist Ben Arthurs, who had his shot saved by the goalkeeper.

Just before the half-time whistle the home keeper would prevent Ards from taking the lead when he turned over a rising, 30 yard shot from Gareth Tommons.

The day’s opening goal arrived on 52 minutes when Gerard McMullan collected the ball out of the left of penalty area. As the PSNI defence backed off, McMullan dropped a shoulder and made his way into box before finishing low.

Shortly after and Tommons again had the keeper working when he fired in a half volley that was tipped over the bar.

Ards doubled their lead on 63 minutes when a cross in from the right was deflected high into the air. Arthurs kept his eye on the ball the whole way, meaning he was first to react when it came down, turning on the spot to tap it home.
